Do I really need to waterproof my suede boots ?

I bought a nice pair of Johnston & Murphy desert boots (Meness). Made of a nice dark brown suede. Do I really need to waterproof them? People have told me different things. Some people say if the boots are well made,don't bother, because it will give no significant benefit. Also, I have found using a water-proofing spray on suede tends to change the color, which I dont want to do. I welcome your feedback!
