Trace Russian/Polish ancestors?

I'm sure this has been asked before, but does anyone know any good places or ways to trace a Russian or Polish ancestor who lied about their age, changed their name when they came to the US, did not travel through Ellis Island, and refused to speak to their children of their family and past? I'm having trouble with this one.
