Pentose Phosphate Pathway question!?

In the pentose phosphate pathway, the oxidative step is exergonic and releases lots of energy. However, the non-oxidative step doesn't consume the energy because its overall free energy change is close to zero. If the oxidative phases releases energy (in the form of NADPH) but the non-oxidative phase doesn't consume any energy, how is it possible for them to keep cycling?
